A Science Park is an organisation managed by specialised professionals, whose main aim is to increase the wealth of its community by promoting the culture of innovation and the competitiveness of its associated businesses and knowledge-based institutions.
To enable these goals to be met, a Science Park stimulates and manages the flow of knowledge and technology amongst universities, R&D institutions, companies and markets; it facilitates the creation and growth of innovation-based companies through incubation and spin-off processes; and provides other value-added services together with high quality space and facilities.” (IASP International Board, 6 February 2002).
Although there may be certain differences between them with respect to the involvement of Biotechnology, projects under these afore-mentioned labels share many goals, elements and methodology and therefore come under the remit of this document.
The figures reported in this document show that Science and Bio-Technology Parks are the perfect habitat for businesses and institutions aiming at the development of new high tech products for Human Health needs as well as Agro-food market demand applying biotechnology solutions.
The Italian biotech sector is characterized by a strong geographical concentration. Almost 80% of Italian biotech companies is concentrated in the following regions: Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Emilia and Sardinia.

Over 50% of the Small Medium Enterprise biotech are in fact located in Science Parks incubators established in the above mentioned regions. More than in other EU countries, being located in a Science Park proved to be the winning choice to start-up a new biotech company having to face the first 3 to five more delicate years of life.
