Overview
founded in 2005

The Laboratory of Biomedical Embryology is part of the Interdipartimental Centre for Stem Cell Research (UNISTEM www.unistem.it) of the University of Milan. Beside the teaching and academic activity the academic and research staff is actively involved in research work. The main research topics are: the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in mammalian oocyte maturation early embtyonic development; the effects of endocrine disrupters on reproduction;the development from farm animal species of experimental models for biomedical research. In particular models are being developed for the cryobanking of ovarian tisue to be applied to the preservation of fertility in young cancer patients. Protocols for the non-invasive evaluation of oocyte quality to be applied to the routine practice of assisted reproduction are currently being developed in close collaboration with the Infertility Unit, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology, Fondazione Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Mangiagalli e Regina Elena. Moreover the isolation of parthenogenetic embryonic stem cells is being studied for their possible application in cell therapy protocols, leading to a patent application for a the isolation of these cell lines from human oocytes.
