The global overview of the biotech industry has highlighted that the pharmaceutical and biotech companies are considering strategic partnering and M&A as viable strategies to maximize their probability of success. This scenario opens interesting perspectives for the Italian biotech industry, which has proved capable of compensating the lack of a mature investment system with strategic alliances to finance its companies created thanks to strong scientific research. 2006 has been a very important year for the Italian biotech industry thanks to the successful IPOs of Gentium, BioXell and Newron Pharmaceuticals. This 2007 edition of the report highlights also the growth of the four main Italian clusters indicating the strong points of each and their potential complementation. |
The analysis shows that these four Italian biotech clusters located in Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany and Friuli Venezia- Giulia, have succeeded in weaving an efficient network between SMEs, research organisations, trade associations and local governments creating a favourable milieu for start-up creation and development. The challenge now is to strengthen the clusters and make them grow to into established businesses. Finally, this analysis aims to provide new elements for defining actions and strategies to support the expansion of Italy’s biotech sector. A strong integration among these clusters may create a new development model that could become a reference point at the national level to fill the competitive gap Italy faces in the biotech industry.
